What is crud sickness?

CRUD sickness, also known as Cabin-Recirculated/Compressed Air Disease, is a condition that occurs when individuals are exposed to low humidity levels and poor air circulation in enclosed spaces, such as airplanes, cars, and buildings. This can lead to symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, dizziness, dry eyes, nasal congestion, and sore throat.

The condition is caused by a combination of factors including the recirculated air in enclosed spaces, which can lead to the spread of germs and bacteria, as well as the low humidity levels which can dry out mucous membranes in the respiratory system and eyes.

To prevent and alleviate CRUD sickness, it is recommended to stay hydrated, use saline nasal sprays or drops, and take breaks to get fresh air and stretch during long periods of travel in enclosed spaces. Using a personal air purifier or wearing a face mask can also help reduce exposure to germs and bacteria.
